LOST IN TRANSLATION: CLEAR AND EXPRESSING SPEAKING AND READING (FOR CHILDREN 7 YEARS – 8 YEARS AND 9 YEARS - 11 YEARS)

Although many children are able to identify words, most do not connect ideas together to make sense of what is being read. Delivery often lacks a flow, with pauses misplaced.

In addition, unfamiliar words are often glossed over or misread.  Decoding is essential for these words to be pronounced correctly or almost correctly to make sense of a written text.

This a programme to assist children with:

  • pronouncing words clearly,

  • expressing speaking and reading,

  • expanding vocabulary and analysing the written word through texts appreciation and improvisation activities

Benefits: Participants will be confident in speaking and delivery.  Through reading of passages and texts analysis, they would be more aware of vocabulary, and the written word and have a better understanding of the English language.

Duration & Fees:

  • A two-day programme of 2.5 hours per day, totalling 5 hours.

  • $60 per child (maximum 7 children per workshop)

Venue: Tampines St 11

Courses in Communication Skills and Speech and Drama are also available.  Look out for programme dates and times on this website.

LOST IN TRANSLATION: SPEAKING TO BE UNDERSTOOD

(YOUTH & ADULTS)

speech and inflection patterns.

This workshop aims to introduce:

  • proper speech patterns,

  • correct articulation.

  • how to process our thoughts before communicating them to others.

Highlights:

Participants will be more mindful of the English Spoken Word in vocal expression and articulation, through fun exercises and group work.

Duration and fee:

  • A 2.5 hour introductory workshop on the spoken word.

  • $40 per participant (minimum 5 participants).

Venue: Tampines St 11

LITERATURE COURSES

LITERATURE is the beauty of communication through the expression of words. It widens our world to embrace lands and people all over. Cultures and traditions that cannot be reached through travel, can be experienced through the written word.

The Academics:

Apart from analysing texts and expressing thoughts and ideas, Literature helps us process words in the academics.

  • Comprehension passages are easily understood as words take shape and meaning, making answering questions easy.

  • Compositions are more creative and insightful.

  • Math problems and Humanities become clear because language allows for easy and correct interpretation.

  • All subjects are quickly grasped as topics and chapters become clear.

With the skills of analysis through Literature, and in time, these subjects become more alive and valued.

Literature is life because Literature is essentially thinking and feeling words. We may meet the world through news and travel, but we enter it through Literature.” - Gwee Li Sui

Cora Schooling

My dream was to be a Speech and Drama teacher.  I had an excellent mentor and teacher. I worked hard, did lots of research and had full confidence in teaching. Thank you, Debbie.

2

Siti Masykurah

The experience I gained at AIM allowed me to explore new aspects of myself outside my comfort zone. Debbie's facilitation/teaching led me to realize speech and drama are part of everyday life. This experience helped me to appreciate the power of speech and drama to influence our lives, and how embracing them can help us grow as individuals. Furthermore, I learned how important self-expression can be in shaping ourselves. The experience gave me the opportunity to develop a greater appreciation for communication nuances, which I can use now &  in my future endeavors.

Heather Reutens

I was extremely nervous about the ATCL Performance exam.  I owe my diploma to the unshakeable confidence of my teacher and mentor.  Debbie carefully chose my pieces, and showed me how to remember the texts.  She really made me think as to the appropriateness of my movements, facial and voice expressions.  Thanks Debbie for influencing thousands of school-going children, through me.
